We also like to arrange this for around 12 weeks, but it can be performed between 10 and 14 weeks. Occasionally during the scan, a miscarriage might be diagnosed even though you might still ‘feel pregnant’. For the majority of women, the week scan is a reassuring and memorable experience, but sometimes problems are found. Some findings may not be significant and will resolve themselves.
Others can forewarn of problems that would otherwise not be detected until birth or even infancy. Some information can cause considerable anxiety and can lead parents to consider options regarding continuation of the pregnancy. It is important to remember that only some abnormalities can be detected by scan; others are difficult to detect and therefore may be overlooked by scan, while some do not develop until later in the pregnancy or after birth.
These will be discussed at antenatal clinic appointments. If it is still low, we will arrange for you to see a doctor.

About your scans and tests
The main purpose of a dating scan is to check the stage of pregnancy and therefore when the baby is due. Measuring the baby can be more accurate than dating by the last menstrual period. It is also an opportunity to check the baby is alive and developing as expected, and check for twins. This scan may also be part of your screening test for Down’s syndrome nuchal translucency scan. Occasionally, if the baby is in an awkward position, an internal scan may be carried out, using a vaginal probe.
Important Notes. Sometimes you will be scheduled for additional scans. These follow-up scans do not mean there is a complication with your baby!
Obstetric ultrasound, also known as prenatal or pregnancy ultrasound, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of a developing embryo or fetus. Your doctor will use information from obstetric ultrasounds to track pregnancy progress, gestational age and help predict delivery dates. During an obstetric ultrasound, you will be on a bed, usually on your back. You may be asked to change position during your scan. Changing position helps move your organs and the fetus into a better position so the sonographer can capture high-quality images.
If you have an Alberta Health Care card or valid health care card from out of province, there is no cost for an obstetric ultrasound except in Quebec. An obstetric ultrasound scan lasts approximately 45 to 60 minutes. If you have multiple fetuses, the exam will take longer, usually about 90 minutes. One significant other is welcome to join you in the room for the entire duration of the exam.
