Beginning in , Columbia Records continued development of this technology. Peter Goldmark and his staff undertook exhaustive efforts to address problems of recording and playing back narrow grooves and developing an inexpensive, reliable consumer playback system. The EP discs typically emulated the playing time of the former 78 rpm discs, while the LP discs provided up to one-half hour of time per side. In late , a system of cutting and playing back stereo was devised and generally accepted by the industry.

When Emile Berliner first established the United States Gramophone Company in , the recording industry was already eight years old; it had been a tumultuous beginning for the business, marked by a race to register patents, industrial espionage, and personal rivalries. The next six years would bring more conflict, and in the end would lead to Berliner’s decision to give up control of his patents in the United States to his associate, Eldridge Johnson, and establish an independent company in Canada.
Shortly after inventing the phonograph in , Thomas Edison established the first business devoted to recorded sound, the Edison Speaking Phonograph Company. It had five stockholders including Gardiner G. Hubbard, Alexander Graham Bell’s father-in-law. After initial demonstrations of the new invention, like the one at Rideau Hall, however, the company went dormant and Edison turned his attention elsewhere.
This prompted Edison to take up his interest in the phonograph in an attempt to reassert control over sound recording technology, and to reorganize his original corporation into the Edison Phonograph Co. It was at this time that Edison adopted modifications of some of the Bell-Tainter innovations and created the Improved Phonograph which utilized solid wax cylinders and a sapphire-point stylus. One of the earliest surviving audio recordings made in Canada was made by Lord Stanley, Governor General of Canada, to the people and president of the United States.
The whereabouts of the original cylinder, made on September 11, , are unknown, but a re-recording was made in President and gentlemen, The best use that I can make of this wonder of the age, the phonograph, is to bid you, on behalf of the citizens of the Dominion of Canada, the most hearty welcome and to assure you that we are at all times most happy to meet our friends from the United States in the pursuit of song, of art and all that may embellish the human life.
We bid you a very hearty welcome.

Although my knowledge of Dutch is scant, it was obvious that this was an important article, well-researched and carefully written, and deserved to be read by a wider, English-speaking audience. Ben translated it into English and it was then checked over by pianist Alan Rogers. Grateful thanks are extended to them for their hard work! In the early years of the history of the Victor Record Company, the factories, offices, and some of the studios were situated in the city of Camden.

The album reached 32 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart. After Presley’s induction into the army on March 24, , RCA Victor and his manager, Colonel Tom Parker , were faced with the prospect of keeping his name before the public for two years with no possibility of live performances, no movies, and with few unissued marketable recordings in the vault.
A recording session was arranged for two days in June, which yielded enough items for five more single sides , singles being the commercial focus for rock and roll in the s. Four of those tracks would be issued on 45s in and during his absence while doing military service. Presley, however, also did well in the albums market, all but one of his previous seven LPs charting no lower than 3, and RCA Victor wished to continue issuing albums by Presley given his sales record.

Note: I haven’t kept up with this project over the past few years, but here, at least, is an updated version of the labelography page, with certain links fixed. The principal goal of this project is to assemble an illustrated list of label types found on home recording discs of the mid-twentieth century. A further and perhaps more important goal is to produce a dating guide for home recording discs. Obviously there is no way to determine the date of an undated home recording with certainty based only on the label type.
People often used blank discs many years after they were originally produced; I have discs in my collection manufactured during World War Two but recorded in the s, and some people are still making recordings on vintage blanks. However, by determining approximately when each label type was originally introduced, we can at least come up with a set of earliest possible recording dates for disc home recordings.

The Victor Company and its successors made no Gilbert and Sullivan recordings of any note, except the three sets on so-called long playing discs of the Victor Light Opera Company’s H. None of these have discernible matrix numbers. The Victor releases of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas were imported and repressed from the original Gramophone Company matrices. However, the worldwide importance of the recordings and related activities of the Victor Company impels the writer to present a detailed study of the matrix number systems used by them.
When he became embroiled in litigations over various patent rights, he approached Emile Berliner, and founded the Victor Talking Machine Company on October 3, Berliner received forty percent of the stock, for which he gave Johnson the rights to the gramophone patents, which apparently included those for both the manufacture of gramophones and the recording process. This seems evident from the three patent numbers on the identification plate for the Berliner Gramophone, shown in Part One of this article.

My thanks and appreciation to both. Victor, or rather Consolidated, was making recordings as early as May 17, Fagan and Moran indicate at least 17 earlier recording sessions, beginning on January 12, Since they had not yet received the rights to Berliner’s recording process, these recordings were largely surreptitious.
